The urban layout of the market preserved to this day dates back to late Middle Ages — approx. 13th century, when Serock (which back then was still known as Szyroczec — in reference to the impressive width of the riverbed created in this location by the Narew and its tributary, the Bug River) was used as a castellan stronghold, established for defensive purposes.
The trading settlement founded to the north of the stronghold eventually transformed into a medieval city. The original city hall building was constructed in the 1st half of the 15th century. Fairs, which took place four times a year and attracted local craftsmen and merchants from nearby towns, contributed to development of Serock.
At present, the market — together with the modern city hall towering over it — is the location for leisure and urban outdoor events.
